Yacht design software - and then some

Yacht Design Software

Yacht design software is a topic you can discuss about to no end. The table below lists some of the yacht design software titles that I found interesting or useful. It's by no means complete, so if you have suggestions of your own, please drop me a line.

Yacht design software & other stuff
MultiSurf, one of the best programs around for developing hulls, decks, appendages, bulbs, etc. If you need highly accurate 3D surfaces, MultiSurf will do quite nicely indeed. Unfortunately it's way to expensive for amateur designers, even the 'light' version is.
Perhaps AeroHydro Inc. is willing to sponsor this project and put a copy (together with the VPP) at my disposal ;-) ?
FREE!ship open source yacht design software: the FREE!ship modelling kernel is purely based on subdivision surfaces. It uses a mixture of Loop subdivision and Catmull Clark subdivision surfaces called quad-triangle subdivision. This enables the user to design the most complex surfaces with only one surface.
HullDrag/32, a hull resistance calculation program that suggests optimum values for Cp and LCB, based on a target optimisation speed. Useful in those early design phases, where a full VPP analysis is sort of an overkill or even downright impossible. Written in C by the publisher of this web site, so I hope you forgive me for plugging my own product here. It won't happen elsewhere on this site, I promise...
XFOIL is an interactive program for the design and analysis of subsonic isolated single-segment airfoils. It was written at MIT by professor Mark Drela.
CalculiX is a free program for 3D structural finite element analysis. FEM-models can be build, calculated and post-processed. The pre- and post-processor is an interactive 3D-tool using the openGL API. The solver is able to do linear and non-linear calculations. Static, dynamic and thermal solutions are available. Both programs can be used independently.
Elmer is an open-source computational tool for multi-physics problems (FEA/FEM). It has been developed in collaboration with Finnish universities, research laboratories and industry
IntelliCAD 2000 - So you're using a Win32 platform and need a free and truly professional CAD software, right ? I bet you'll want this application and this one only. Period. The freely downloadable version is pretty complete, but lacks niceties like a rendering engine and a good plotter driver. That won't keep you from drawing nice boats though. Since IntelliCAD-2000 supports standard AutoCAD file formats like DWG and DXF, there are plenty of other ways to commit your designs to paper. Check out this product. [Image]
POV-Ray (Persistence of Vision). Do you too want to generate those glossy computer renderings of your Mini-650 design? I suggest you download this free product and get going! I plan to use this product exclusively to generate images of what gets created by our project team.
VMWare is a magical piece of software that allows me to run multiple operating systems at the same time on a single pc. It's a dream come true, as it allows me to run multiple applications on multiple operating systems without the need to switch back and forth between two or more pc's. As you can see by the logo on the right, VMWare, Inc. is officially sponsoring the OSYD-650 initiative by putting a copy at my disposal. This sponsorship enables me to conveniently convert files from different operating systems and integrate them in the OSYD-650 documentation set. This software isn't targeted at yacht design, but check it out nonetheless. [Image]
